Russell Cawyer Authors Blog on San Antonio’s Paid Sick Leave Ordinance

In a 9-2 city council vote, San Antonio joined Austin to become the second city in Texas to require private employers to provide paid sick leave.

Russell Cawyer's blog post—entitled “San Antonio Passes Ordinance Requiring Private Employers to Provide Paid Sick Leave” and published on the Texas Employment Law Update—addresses San Antonio’s sick leave ordinance and the effect on private businesses.  Under the ordinance, private employers doing business in San Antonio are required to provide one hour of paid sick leave to employees for every 30 hours worked.  The ordinance allows employees to accrue between 48 and 64 hours of paid sick leave to be used if the employee or the employee’s family member is sick or injured; is a victim of stalking, domestic abuse, or sexual assault; or otherwise requires medical, mental, or preventive care.  San Antonio’s ordinance is scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2019, but employers with five or fewer employees will have until 2021 to comply.
